10 short design lessons from Dieter Rams

Dieter Rams portraitDieter Rams, a man who was responsible for the design of Braun’s products for almost 30 years until 1998, is one of the living icons of the product design icons of the 20th century, His designs were a deep source of inspiration and it looks like this trend will continue for some time. When you look on his work you can almost feel the sturdiness, usefulness and innovation.

What I really like about Dieter Rams are his !0 principles of good design. Most of them, if not all, apply not only to product design, but also to UI design and I believe that to design in general. Continue reading

User Experience Design in context of Graphic Design

Right, here you can see the presentation I did in November 2009 as a part of the “Graphic Design in Context” module I did at uni.

The presentation explains the context and role of the Graphic Design in designing the User Interface and UX overall. It mainly concentrates on visual design of the User Interface, but also mentions some obvious problems and most important cornerstones of the User-Centered Design.

“The appearance of the device must provide the critical clues required for its proper operation.”
- Don Norman

My view of design radically changed when I started reading The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman. Continue reading

Don’t Make Me Think

Don't Make Me Think by Steve KrugThis is the book that will certainly make you think – a real classic piece on web usability for beginners!

I know a few designers who got into the usability field after reading Steve Krug’s Don’t Make Me Think, mainly because it’s nice eye-opener for those concerned only with web features, code and fancy eye-candy.

I suppose it’s perfect source for those who want to get the basic idea how to design for web and keep users in mind.

How it all started

Welcome, traveller! This blog is going to serve as a place for sharing my thoughts on Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction, User Experience Design and design in general.

The journey begins

In the early days of my web design and development career, that is about 6 – 7 years ago, I was mainly concerned with designing nice visuals and writing a clean and semantic code. Accessibility, and SEO were slowly becoming buzzwords and I was learning about W3C guidelines and standards, about WCAG and on-page optimisation factors. Continue reading
